What is a softphone?

February 24, 2021 Telavox IT

A softphone is a program that allows you to use your computer as a telephone. A softphone in a computer works like a regular phone. You can dial phone numbers, make outgoing calls, receive calls, and connect calls as usual (but via your computer).

A softphone has the same functions as a regular phone (often more!) and facilitates internal communication and service to customers. It is an exceptional solution if you spend a lot of time working on your computer and, at the same time, talk a lot on the phone.

How does a softphone work?

A softphone is software you install on your computer or tablet that allows you to use the device the same way as a phone.

When you log in to your softphone via Telavox, the user interface is simple, and you can see your colleagues’ status, enter phone numbers, make calls, connect calls, and answer incoming calls. The only difference is that you call over the internet instead of the regular telephone network.

How do you use a softphone?

With a softphone, you use the computer to do everything you would do with your smartphone. A softphone is usually utilised together with VoIP / IP telephony which is a way to make calls over the internet. To use a softphone, the company needs a VoIP provider, a service that can carry calls over the network. But the only thing the softphone user needs is the internet – and a headset!

What advantages are there to softphones?

There are many benefits to using a softphone at your company.
  • It is cheap
A softphone does not require a lot of expensive hardware as a fixed PBX does, nor does each employee need to have their own smartphone.
  • You can quickly get started
All you need to do is install the program, log in, and put on your headset – then you’re ready to start using your computer as a phone.
  • It’s easy to upgrade
Because a softphone is a software, it is easy to make sure you have the latest updated version on your computer.
  • It’s easy to integrate with other systems
With a softphone, you can easily integrate your PBX with a CRM tool, for example, and quickly get information about the person who’s calling.
  • It works abroad
With a softphone on your laptop or phone, it is easy to make calls online, even abroad.
  • The softphone in Telavox has many great features
Chat, SMS, conference calls, call forwarding, call recording, contact lists, and video calls. These are just some of the clever features in Telavox.

Simply put: A softphone is an all-in-one solution for corporate communication!
